FIND YOUR FIT

Trucker? Snapback? What is the difference?

Totally legit questions considering there are over 100+ hat designs out there these days- ok maybe not that many, but when shopping for a hat it can feel that way. Fortunately, we are here to tell you it’s not that complicated- let's break it down and help you find your fit!

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Hat: Snapbacks, Trucker Hats, and More

Hat Closures

Snapback Hats

Snapback's are probably the most commonly mis-categorized hats out there- don't quote us but based on our subjective experience people think it’s the bill that makes a SnapBack a SnapBack-but the back closure of the hat is actually what makes a snapback, a snapback. Snapback hats are simply characterized by the back closure being one that, you guessed it, snaps. Like this:

Some hats styles are fitted, some are metal, plastic buckle, even velcro. So when you see the phrase "Snapback Hat" just know it has nothing to do with the style, bill, or cap shape! All our hats here at Vacation Patches are Snapback's!

Key Point:  The adjustable snap closure allows for a comfortable, customizable fit, making it ideal for most head sizes.

Trucker Style Hats

Another commonly mis-categorize hat is the infamous "Trucker" hat. Many think/call trucker hats truckers because of the curved bill- sorry to be that guy again, but truckers actually get there name from the mesh backing of the hat. Like this:

Some curved bill hats hats are truckers, but not all truckers are curved bill hats....when the back is mesh, it is a trucker. The curved bill hat with no mesh backing?- those are most often called "dad-hats.” Now, when you see the phrase "Trucker Hat" just know it has nothing to do with the curve in the bill!

Key Point: The mesh panel offers excellent ventilation, making trucker hats a favorite for hot weather or physical activities.

Hat Panels

This is probably where most hat shoppers, companies, and the like, go wrong when describing or understanding a hat- its ok, the hat game is complicated at times. Like mentioned before, Snapback hats are often mis-categorized as the flat bill hat and truckers are mis-categorized by the bend in the bill. Again this is not technically correct. There are various "hat panels" that help you decide what hat shape, look and fit, well, fits you best.

Key Point: Hat panels are how many material "panels" are sewn together to construct the hat, giving it height and fit.

5-Panel Hat vs. 6-Panel Hat vs. 7-Panel Hat: Understanding the Differences

5-Panel Hat: A 5-panel hat is known for its streamlined and minimalist design. Featuring five sewn together panels, this style offers a sleek and low-profile appearance. It typically has a shorter brim and a slightly less structured fit compared to a 6-panel hat. This makes it perfect for those who prefer a casual and modern look.

These hats do not have a sewn-line in the front of the hat, leaving a wide open smooth front to the hat (like this OG Mickey Style):

6-Panel Hat: A 6-panel hat embodies a more traditional and classic design. The additional panel at the back provides a more structured and fitted style. This type of hat usually has a slightly longer brim and a higher crown, offering a versatile and timeless look. Ideal for those who appreciate a conventional style with a polished finish.

These hats have a sewn-line in the front of the hat (like this Team Walt Style):

7-Panel Hat: Much like the 5-panel hat, the 7-panel hat maintains a sleek and modern aesthetic. It incorporates the minimalist and low-profile characteristics of the 5-panel design, ensuring a fashionable yet understated look. The shorter brim and unstructured fit add to its casual vibe, making it ideal for everyday wear.

Hat Bill's

Not those kind of bills, these kinds of bills:

When it comes to choosing the perfect hat, the shape of the bill is a crucial factor that often goes overlooked. Whether you prefer a flat bill or a curved bill, each offers a distinct look and feel, adding a unique touch to your overall style.

Flat Bill Hat: Consists of a wider-style look due to the flattened bill shape and is more suitable for larger head styles, wider fit, and a more structured look.

Curved-Bill Hat: Consists of a "arch" to the front of the hat bill, providing more shade on the sides of your eyes, and a closer more snug fit around your dome.

Key Point: The bill shape gives a hat more of its function and fit- Flat bill is wider and less side-shade cover, curved is more fitted and offers shade to sides of eyes

Finding YOUR Fit:

So, knowing the hats here are Snapback's, with Curved or Flat-Bill, and have 5, 6, or 7-panels, here are some key considerations when choosing the fit for you:

Fit on Your Head: When thinking of what hat to pick for how it will fit your head shape, consider these:

  • More Snug: Go Curved Bill as it will form more cloer to your head and temples
  • More Boxy: If you like a box shape look and more square fit, a Flat-Bill hat would be best of the options
  • More Side Shade: If you like more shade on your eye-sides, a curved bill will be better and give more coverage
  • Taller foreheads or head shape, the 5-Panel Trucker is the best bet. Smaller head shape go with 6/7 panel or choose a curved bill

Style/Look: When considering how the hat will style with your look or look on you, consider these:

  • Flat Bill shows off more of the design on the front- the patch or embroidery is more prominent
  • Curved Bill shows less as it lays a bit flatter on your head
  • Flat-Bill is a bit wider style look
  • Curved is more of a sporty look and style

Activity: If you are consider hitting the beach, a day at the theme park, or just running errands, consider these:

  • The Trucker style offers the mesh backing to et your dome breathe a bit
  • Non-trucker style is more of a thicker material and does have holes along the top for some air, but its not meant to breathe as much
  • Snapback style makes the adjusting easy so you can tighten or loosen as you need
